A MING BRONZE ZUN WITH BEAST-HANDLES AND KUI-DRAGON BANDS A bronze zun with flared mouth, short neck and bulbous body on a spreading foot. A pair of beast-head handles with ring pendants is set to the neck, their eyes and snouts rounded. The shoulder band is cast with kui dragons on a fret-and-spiral ground, while the lower body is left plain. The patina is dark and warm with cinnabar patches. The zun was an ancient wine vessel, its flared mouth allowing it to be lifted and poured during rites. The kui-dragon band winds across the shoulder on a fret-and-spiral ground; the kui dragon is a single-bodied dragon motif denoting solemnity and communication with the spirits. The plain lower body, quiet against the decorated shoulder, follows the ancient taste for restraint. Ming and Qing scholars kept zun in studios and halls for flowers, incense or pure connoisseurship; this example's beast-head ring handles, archaic kui band and warm cinnabar-flecked patina carry an ancient air.
