A PAIR OF GILT-BRONZE GU-FORM BEAKER VASES WITH CHASED DRAGONS AND CLOUDS 尺寸:W:17.5cm;H:32cm 銅鎏金。 A pair of gilt-bronze gu-form beaker vases, each with a flared mouth, waisted midsection and spreading foot, four arris flanges. The upper and lower sections are chased with frontal five-claw dragons threading through cloud scrolls, a shou longevity medallion above each dragon. The waist is decorated with kui-dragon and shou brocade grounds, and the rim and foot with keyfret bands. The gilding is bright and the chasing crisp, characteristic of Qianlong period gilt-bronze vases. Gilding on bronze was traditionally done by the mercury-amalgam, or fire-gilding, method: gold foil was dissolved in mercury to a paste, applied to the bronze body, then gently heated over a charcoal fire until the mercury evaporated, leaving a thin film of gold bonded to the copper; the surface was finally burnished with an agate. Chasing was carried out with small chisels and a hammer, working dragon scales, ruyi cloud heads and keyfret into the metal one stroke at a time, so that the pattern stands slightly raised against the ground.
