A BRONZE GARLIC-HEAD VASE WITH TUBULAR THROUGH-HANDLES, BEARING A HUANG CHUN MARK, QING DYNASTY This bronze vase follows the Song-dynasty garlic-head porcelain form: a bulbous garlic mouth, a slender neck decorated with a wave-pattern band and flanked by two tubular through-handles also cast with waves, and a plain rounded pear-shaped body. The foot ring is splayed; inside a rectangular cartouche at the centre of the base is incised a two-character mark, Huang Chun. The bronze has a warm yellow-brown patina. It is an elegant Qing-dynasty bronze flower vase. Bronze flower vases were standard studio display pieces, holding plum or chrysanthemum sprays. The garlic-head form derives from Song porcelain: slender neck, pear body, bulbous mouth suited to long plum branches. Qing bronzes took the form for their weight and watertightness. The tubular through-handles follow the form of bronze hu, convenient for tying cords and lending a dignified presence. This piece is a plain-cast bronze garlic-head vase whose handles and wave bands are integral cast decoration, with the two-character mark Huang Chun incised at the base; the bronze is sober and understated.
