A GOLD- AND SILVER-INLAID BRONZE SQUARE HU VASE WITH TAOTIE MASKS, ON A ZITAN STAND, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD This bronze square hu vase takes the form of a ritual hu: flared mouth, narrow neck, sloping shoulders, and a high foot. The neck and body are covered with taotie masks whose eyes are inlaid with gold, on a ground of key-fret and cloud patterns interwoven with silver wire. It stands on a separately carved zitan stand. The bronze has red and green patina, warm and mellow. It is a Qing gold- and silver-inlaid bronze. Gold- and silver-inlay began on Shang-Zhou bronzes and flourished through the Warring States and Western Han, declining after Sui-Tang: channels are cut in the bronze, gold and silver wire tapped in and ground flush, so the metals contrast with the bronze ground. Here the neck and body are covered with taotie masks, their eyes inlaid in gold on a ground of key-fret and cloud interwoven with silver; the flashing gold eyes and the zitan stand make it a dignified court piece. Taotie masks, once the decor of Zhou ritual vessels, carry an air of solemn erudition.
