A MING BRONZE PEAR-SHAPED VASE WITH TWIN-DRAGON HANDLES AND TAOTIE BANDS This bronze pear-shaped vase (yuhuchunping) has a slender neck, sloping body and low foot. Two dragon-head ring handles flank the neck, the heads finely chased. A taotie and thunder-pattern band, on a key-fret ground, decorates the neck. The rest is plain, the bronze black-brown and mellow. It is a Ming bronze vase. Bronze flower vases, like censers, were key desk furnishings. The yuhuchun form comes from Song Cizhou and Jingdezhen wares: long neck, pear body, suited to long plum branches. The taotie and thunder-pattern band on the neck, once the decor of Zhou ritual vessels, carries an air of solemn erudition. Dragon-head ring handles follow the form of bronze hu, aiding grip and lending dignity.
