The interior is chased with sea waves amid which a carp leaps, scales, fins and tail finely rendered. The reverse has a circular dragon medallion inscribed with the neiyong (for palace use) characters, and four ruyi feet. The bronze is yellow-brown and mellow. It is a Ming palace bronze tray. The carp leaping through the Dragon Gate comes from the Sanqin ji: Longmen on the Yellow River was cut by Yu; fish that swam up and through became dragons, those that failed returned with a scarred forehead. Passing the civil-service examination was therefore called leaping the Dragon Gate. Carp-and-dragon decoration on trays, inkstones and ink cakes wished for success in the exams and rapid advancement.
