The blue ground is wired all over with scrolling lotus, bats and the Eight Buddhist Treasures; roundels on the upper and lower bulbs carry the large characters Da and Ji. Rim and foot are gilt. The base bears a round four-character Qianlong nianzhi mark. The colours are rich, the wires flowing. They are a Qing court enamel pair. The gourd (hulu) is a homophone for fortune and emolument, and its many seeds symbolize posterity. Daji (great good fortune) is the most auspicious phrase in the Book of Changes. Double-gourd vases inscribed Daji wished for great luck and lasting blessing; the court displayed them at New Year and birthdays.
