A GILT-BRONZE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL 'CHUN' PRESENTATION BOX, WITH A "QIANLONG NIANZHI" MARK A gilt-bronze cloisonné enamel lobed presentation box on beast feet. The lid centre bears a large character chun (spring) on a brocade ground; the sides have reserved panels painted with a garden scene — two scholars conversing beneath a willow, a boy and a crane beside them — separated by seal-script shou characters. Borders of scrolling lotus and keyfret; the base centre bears a circular gilt mark reading Qianlong nianzhi. The turquoise ground is bright. The chun-character presentation box was used in the Qing palace for the beginning of spring and New Year. On the first day of the first lunar month and at lichun, the court displayed boxes with a large chun character to welcome spring and blessings; inside were placed coins, apples and sweets for the season. The garden scene, crane and seal-script shou add wishes of spring and long life. Such enamel boxes were often made in the Qianlong imperial workshops as gifts to princes and ministers.
