A GILT-BRONZE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL BOWL WITH LIONS PLAYING WITH BROCADE BALLS, BEARING A JINGTAI MARK A gilt-bronze cloisonné enamel deep bowl with rounded sides and a ring foot. The exterior turquoise ground is wired with two lions playing with brocade balls among clouds; below the rim is a black triangular diaper band, and near the foot a lotus-petal band; the interior centre is decorated with scrolling flowers. The interior base of the foot ring is incised with a vertical four-character mark, Jingtai nianzhi. Rim and foot are gilt. The enamels are rich and the gilt lines flowing. The lion playing with a ball is an auspicious subject: shi (lion) puns on shi (grand preceptor), the highest ministerial titles, so paired lions wish high office through the generations. The lion is also the vehicle of Manjusri and, after Buddhism entered China, a guardian beast. The brocade ball, often holding a bell, adds wishes for vigour. Lions-at-play were a common motif on Qing enamel, textiles and porcelain.
