A QING BRONZE GU-FORM BEAKER VASE WITH FLANGES AND TAOTIE MASKS 尺寸:D:19.5cm;H:30cm 銅鑄。 A bronze gu-form beaker vase of trumpet mouth, narrow waist and tall flared foot. String mouldings mark the divisions; the belly carries a relief taotie mask band with four flanges. The bronze is deep brown, archaic in tone. Flanges are a classic bronze decoration, raised ridges along the vessel corners that mark the vessel's spine and lend it uprightness. The taotie mask is laid out in symmetrical frontality with protruding eyes, stern and grave, the ritual motif by which ancient vessels communicated with the spirits. The trumpet-mouthed gu later became a flower vase, holding a single offering branch with sober dignity on the studio table.
