Below the mouth runs a band of upright lotus petals; the sides are cast in relief with interlaced chi-dragons scattered with round bosses. Two mask-head handles hold loose rings, and three beast legs splay outward; the base centre bears a square seal cast in six characters, Da Ming Xuande nianzhi. The patina is a mottled dark green and brown. The pushou, a taotie-like mask holding a ring, lends a solemn guardiansome presence to ancient bronzes. The rings made the vessel easier to carry while signalling ritual status. Interlaced chi-dragons with round bosses run across the belly, an upright lotus band circles the rim, and three splayed beast feet stand firm. Such a large dish held water as a brush rinser, bore incense or fruit, and stood in the studio or hall, ancient and steady.
