A SILVER-INLAID BRONZE DRUM-FORM BRUSH POT WITH MASK-AND-RING HANDLES, BEARING A "SHISOU" SEAL MARK 尺寸:D:11cm;H:14cm 銅質,筒形。 Cast in bronze, this cylindrical brush pot rises from a flat base to a narrow mouth, with a band of raised bosses around the rim and lower body, evoking the studs of a drum. The sides are set in high relief with beast masks holding loose rings. The walls are inlaid with fine silver threads depicting taotie masks, kui dragons and cloud-and-thunder grounds, framed by key-fret borders. The base is cast with a circular seal-script mark of Shi Sou. With a warm, even patina, it is a scholar's desk piece. Shi Sou is famed for silver-inlaid bronze: grooves are incised on the copper body after a design, fine silver wire is pressed in, hammered fast and ground flush so the silver lines lie smooth with the bronze. The denser the pattern, the greater the labour; the silver plays against the warm bronze for a rich, sombre effect. Here the drum-form pot takes its boss bands from the drum, and the walls carry taotie and kui dragons in fine silver — a refined desk piece.
