A PAIR OF GILT-BRONZE ELEPHANTS BEARING VASES 尺寸:W:25cm;H:38cm 銅鎏金。 A pair of gilt-bronze elephants bearing vases. Each elephant stands square, the trunks curving in paired mirror poses, bodies full, fitted with saddle cloths and harness chased with scrolling flowers and beaded borders. On each back sits a gilt vase with lid and fluttering ribbons. The pair stands on hexagonal gilt pedestals chased with scrollwork, the ruyi-lobed feet turning outward. The gilding is rich; the motif conveys peace under a tranquil reign. Peaceful elephant, or taiping youxiang, is a visual pun: an elephant bearing a vase, ping, sounds like peaceful age, taiping. The elephant itself is auspicious in Buddhism, Queen Maya dreamed of a white elephant entering her side before the Buddha's birth, and it is the mount of Samantabhadra. Paired gilt elephants in palace halls, with trunks in upward and downward mirror poses, thus wished for a reign of peace and abundant harvests.
