A GILT-BRONZE RECTANGULAR SEAL WITH COILED-DRAGON KNOB, QING DYNASTY This rectangular gilt-bronze seal is surmounted by a finely cast coiled-dragon knob crouching with powerful claws and detailed scales. The gilding shows natural wear while retaining a warm lustre. The seal face bears nine relief seal-script characters arranged in three vertical columns, crisply carved. The bronze body has a rich patina, making it a refined scholar's desk object of the Qing period. Seals served as personal credentials from early times, cast in bronze or carved in jade. In the scholar's studio they were pressed onto paintings, books and albums as collector's or leisure seals. Knobs evolved through nose, tile, tortoise, lion and dragon forms; a coiled-dragon knob carried an aura of guardianship and was easy to hold. Qing studio seals were usually of Qingtian or Shoushan stone; gilt-bronze examples followed Han models and served both as collectors' seals and as desk ornaments.
