A GILT-BRONZE SQUARE VASE WITH FOUR SEASONS' FLOWERS AND LION-MASK HANDLES, BEARING A XUANDE MARK, QING DYNASTY This gilt-bronze square vase has a flared square mouth and stepped shoulder, each of its four sides relief-carved with a different flower—plum, peony, chrysanthemum, and bamboo—symbolizing the four seasons. Lion-mask ring handles flank the neck. The gilding is bright, worn in places to the bronze. The base bears an incised Xuande mark. It is a Qing gilt-bronze display vase. Gilt-bronze vases stood alone on a desk or table, or held a single branch of plum, peony or chrysanthemum. The four-season flowers—plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo, or plum, peony, chrysanthemum and bamboo—wished peace through the year, and were the most common decoration on vases, dishes and censers. Lion-mask ring handles follow the form of bronze hu, convenient to grip and dignified. The bright gilding and rounded relief make a refined Qing gilt-bronze display vase.
