A PAIR OF GILT-BRONZE AUSPICIOUS DEER, ON CARVED WOOD STANDS, QING DYNASTY This pair of gilt-bronze auspicious deer stands alert, head raised, antlers branching, the gilding flecked, dark plum spots on shoulder, back and rump. They stand on separately carved zitan ruyi-cloud stands, the wood dark. The pair survives intact, the gilding bright. It is a Qing court display pair. Deer is a homophone for lu (emolument), one of the Five Blessings, paired with Fu and Shou as fortune-emolument-longevity. Auspicious deer amid clouds wished for lasting rank; deer also symbolized longevity, the God of Longevity riding a deer. The palace and gardens displayed pairs of bronze or jade deer, often with cranes, wishing six harmonies spring.
