A QING QIANLONG GILT-BRONZE SEATED FIGURE OF A GURU 尺寸:H:17cm 銅鎏金。 A gilt-bronze figure of a guru seated in vajrasana on a rectangular pedestal. The right hand is raised in vitarka mudra at the chest and the left rests in the lap, while lotus stems rise beside the shoulders to support emblems. The teacher is shown with a shaven crown and a calm, gently smiling face. The monastic robe falls in natural folds, its hems and borders incised with brocade grounds, scrolling vines and lotus petals, and the pedestal is finely engraved with lotus scrolls and beaded edges. Cast and chased with care, the gilt surface is full and even, made as an object of Tibetan Buddhist devotion. In Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and private shrines, portraits of gurus are placed at the centre of the altar, venerated together with buddhas and yidams. Followers offer khata scarves, butter lamps and water bowls before the image, reciting mantras and visualising the master as the source of blessing. The vitarka mudra here denotes the guru turning the wheel of dharma and maintaining an unbroken lineage; the lotus-stem emblems beside the shoulders identify specific lineage holders. Such images were usually cast in copper or brass, fire-gilded, with the mandorla and lotus base cast separately and joined, commissioned by monasteries or donated by lay patrons.
