A NORTHERN WEI-STYLE GILT-BRONZE SEATED BUDDHA ON A WAISTLED FOUR-LEG STAND 尺寸:L:5cm;W:3cm;H:12cm 銅鎏金。 A small gilt-bronze Buddha seated in meditation with hands in dhyana mudra, clad in a robe covering both shoulders and falling in parallel folds. A pointed flame mandorla rises behind the figure. The image is supported on a waisted rectangular four-leg stand, a bench base, its sides incised with dedicatory inscriptions, one reading Wen qi zheng fa and the other Yuan yuan ru shi. Gilding is worn and patinated. The waisted four-leg rectangular base has long been called a bench base, typical of small gilt-bronze Buddhas from the Northern and Southern Dynasties through the Sui and Tang. The figure was cast by piece-mould or lost-wax, then fire-gilded: gold foil was amalgamated with mercury, painted on the bronze and heated so the mercury evaporated, leaving a gold film. The incised dedicatory inscriptions on the base record the pious wish of a donor to hear the true law and to realise every vow.
