A GILT-BRONZE CROWNED FIGURE OF THE MEDICINE BUDDHA 尺寸:H:40cm 銅鎏金。 A gilt-bronze figure of the Medicine Buddha seated in vajrasana on a double-lotus throne. He wears a five-leaf jewelled crown and pendent ear ornaments, with a square face, downcast eyes and gentle smile. The right hand bends down in varada mudra holding a medicinal fruit, while the left rests in the lap holding a bowl. The monastic robe is incised throughout with floral brocade patterns, edged with beaded and lotus-petal borders. The double lotus throne has plump petals. The gilding is full and the chasing precise, made for Tibetan Buddhist devotion. Gilt bronze, or fire-gilding, was already mature in the Warring States period. Gold leaf is cut into shreds and heated with mercury to form a gold amalgam, which is spread over the bronze surface; on heating over charcoal the mercury evaporates, leaving the gold bonded to the bronze, which is then burnished with an agate tool. Repeated applications build up an even layer. On this figure the robe edges and lotus rim are first incised with beaded and petal borders, then gilded, so that the fine lines remain bright. Tibetan Buddhist images of this kind were commonly fire-gilded and enshrined in niches.
