無量壽佛,即阿彌陀佛,梵名 Amitayus(無量壽)與 Amitabha(無量光)同尊異名。 This bronze Amitayus sits in full lotus on a throne base, wearing a five-leaf crown, the face gentle, both hands in dhyana mudra before the belly holding a reliquary bowl. A large openwork flaming mandorla rises behind. Jewelled necklaces and armlets adorn him, the robes flowing. The bronze is ancient, partly gilded. It is a Qing Tibetan Buddhist figure. Amitayus (Buddha of Infinite Life) is the same as Amitabha, lord of the Western Pure Land; Pure Land practice invokes him for rebirth there. Tibetan Buddhism especially reveres Amitayus as lord of longevity; for the Qianlong emperor's and empress dowager's birthdays, the court cast many such images praying for long life. The crowned, bowl-holding, meditation-mudra form is the standard Amitayus.
