A MING BRONZE SEATED FIGURE OF SKANDA 尺寸:H:55cm 銅鑄。 A bronze figure of Skanda, seated in vajrasana. He wears an elaborate jewelled crown surmounted by a pearl, flanked by flame ornaments, with long pendant earrings. His face is square and dignified. He is clad in armour, shoulder guards, breastplate and waistguard incised with beast masks, scrolling vines and brocade patterns, hands pressed together in anjali mudra. The piece is substantial, with an aged patina. Skanda is a Buddhist guardian, chief of the eight generals under the Heavenly King Virudhaka. Entrusted by the Buddha to protect the sangha and the relics, he is said to have recovered a stolen tooth-relic thrown down by a thief. Hence in Chinese temples his image stands in the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, behind the Maitreya image, facing the main shrine hall in vow to defend the dharma. Ming Skanda images are usually shown as a general in helmet and armour, hands pressed together holding his staff, paired with Guan Gong, the Bodhisattva Sangharama, as the temple's two great guardians.
