The elephant is stout, standing square, trunk curled inward and ears pendent, fitted with bridle and saddle cloth. The bodhisattva sits in vajrasana on the elephant's back, wearing a crown and with flowing drapery, holding an attribute. The brownish-red patina is mellow and the casting rounded. A devotional Buddhist group of the Qing period. Such bronze groups were enshrined on a domestic Buddhist altar in the inner hall or studio of a Qing household, placed within a niche and flanked by an incense burner, candlesticks and offering flowers. They received worship on the first and fifteenth of each lunar month. Households of standing commonly kept one devotional figure at home to pray for family peace; the elephant-mounted group also carried the auspicious meaning of benevolent presence.
