A BRONZE FIGURE OF AN ARHAT (LUOHAN), BEARING A DEGUANG MARK 尺寸:W:25cm;H:40cm 銅鑄。 A bronze standing figure of an arhat, bald with thick brows, deep-set eyes and a long beard, chest and shoulder bared, wearing a loosely draped robe. The left hand holds a ruyi-handled staff brought to the lips, the right arm rests behind the back, and the bare feet stand on a naturalistic rock base carved with waves below, the rock face incised with a small Deguang seal. The robe falls in smooth folds, the bronze surface dark and glossy. The arhats were disciples of the Buddha who had overcome the afflictions, recipients of offerings from humans and gods, remaining in the world to protect the dharma. They are commonly grouped as eighteen, each with his own attributes: long-eyebrowed, open-chested, pagoda-bearing, dragon-subduing or tiger-subduing. This figure, staff in hand, standing among waves, with long brows and deep-set features, takes the physiognomy of an Indian monk. The bronze is dark and solemn, the drapery following arhat painting conventions, a Qing devotional piece.
