A BRONZE SEATED FIGURE OF A DAOIST CIVIL DEITY, MING DYNASTY This bronze seated Daoist civil deity wears an official's cap with outstretched wings and a long beard, in wide-sleeved robes with a girdle, holding a gui tablet before his chest. The face is benevolent yet dignified, eyes gently closed; the drapery flows naturally, traces of pigment remaining. It is hollow-cast with a flat base. It is a Ming bronze figure. Daoist civil figures usually represent Wenchang (god of literature), the God of Wealth, the City God or the Earth God. Wenchang governed exams and literature; with the Ming civil-service examination at its height, scholars venerated him. The God of Wealth was especially honoured by merchants. This figure, gui in hands, long-bearded in flowing robes and winged official cap, is the standard Wenchang or Wealth-god type. Bronzes are hollow, sealed at the base, so scriptures or grain could be placed inside for consecration.
