A BRONZE SEATED FIGURE OF SAKYAMUNI, MING DYNASTY This bronze Sakyamuni sits in full lotus on a double-lotus pedestal, the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra and the left in dhyana. He has a high ushnisha of snail-curls, long pendulous ears and a gentle downcast face. The monastic sash and robes fall naturally. The lotus is cast separately and sits on a mandorla-style bronze base. The bronze is dark brown with traces of pigment. It is a Ming Buddhist bronze. Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism, was Siddhartha Gautama, prince of Kapilavastu, who left home at twenty-nine, attained enlightenment at thirty-five and taught for forty-nine years. Images usually show him in full lotus, right hand touching the earth (subduing Mara) and left in meditation, symbolizing enlightenment. The lotus, rising unstained, symbolizes purity. Ming Buddhist bronzes were often consecrated, figure and pedestal cast separately to hold scriptures and relics.
