A BRONZE SEATED FIGURE OF GUANDI, MING DYNASTY This bronze Guandi sits wearing a headcloth and long beard, his face stern and reddish. He is clad in scaled armour under a war robe, the left hand on the knee and the right holding a Spring and Autumn Annals. He rests on a rectangular throne base. The bronze is black and ancient, the armour finely chased. It is a Ming Guandi. Guan Yu (Yunchang) was a Shu-Han general of the Three Kingdoms, famed for loyalty. Posthumously enfeoffed—King in the Song, Demon-Subduing Emperor in the Ming, Holy Emperor Guan in the Qing—he became the martial sage alongside Confucius, and is also the Buddhist guardian and martial God of Wealth. Seated images reading the Spring and Autumn Annals symbolize both letters and arms; merchants venerate him for integrity and prosperity.
