英文品名:A MING BRONZE SEATED EMACIATED ARHAT 尺寸:H:45cm 銅鑄。 A bronze seated emaciated arhat. He sits loosely cross-legged, bare-chested with ribs visible, head shaven, eyes downcast in meditation. A monastic robe drapes from one shoulder with natural folds; one knee is raised and a hand rests on it. The bronze is deep brown, with traces of red lacquer on the robe edges and an archaic patina. A Ming bronze arhat. The emaciated arhat descends from the Buddha's ascetic practise in the mountains, shown gaunt after extreme austerities. In Chan Buddhism, Bodhidharma's wall-gazing likewise favoured lean, uncanny patriarch images. Ming bronze arhats are thus ascetic and spare, unlike full-bodied buddhas and bodhisattvas, expressing the monk's renunciation. The skeletal realism and serene expression are characteristic of the Ming.
