A LARGE GILT-BRONZE SWASTIKA-GROUND LOCK AND KEY, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD, THE SIDE INCISED WITH A KANGXI MARK A large gilt-bronze horizontal lock with its key, the body entirely chased with a continuous swastika brocade ground. The sliding bolt is drawn out by the long key, whose shank is chased with nodal bands. Set into the side is a rectangular cartouche incised in regular script with a Kangxi mark. The gilding shows natural wear and a patinated surface. Made to seal chests and cabinets, the lock is of unusually generous size. Locks have always sealed chests, gates and scripture cases. Spring-action metal locks date to the Han; Ming-Qing palace gates, storehouses and sutra cabinets used large locks whose keys were kept by officials, with opening and closing logged. Qing court locks were usually made by the Imperial Workshops in fire-gilt bronze, the key carried on the person. This piece is of unusually generous size, the side incised with a Kangxi mark, made to seal a palace gate, treasury or temple scripture cabinet. The swastika ground is a Buddhist auspicious sign; Empress Wu Zetian fixed its reading as wan in 693, the auspicious cloud-mark.
