A MING SILVER LOBED DISH WITH CHASED FLORAL DESIGN 尺寸:D:18.5cm 銀質。 A silver dish with a lobed rim, shallow sides and a flat base. The centre is set within a lobed cartouche chased with floral sprays, while between the cartouche and the rim the well is chased on both levels with further leaves and blossoms, petals and veins defined by fine lines. The rim is edged and the sides slope gently. The silver has a muted tone with patches of greenish patina and crust. The chasing is detailed and controlled. Silver dishes of the Ming served as serving pieces for fruit and sweets at banquets, or as desk ornaments holding tea cake and incense. The lobed rim, inherited from Tang-Song gold and silver wares, remained fashionable for dishes and bowls. The composition, a main motif within a central cartouche and secondary sprays between it and the rim, mirrors the layout of contemporary blue-and-white porcelain under literati taste. With use, the base wears thin and the rim shows handling wear. Ming nobles and wealthy merchants commissioned silver for dowries, gifts and household use, often stamping weight and silversmith marks on the underside for later exchange.
