A QING SET OF FOUR SILVER TEAWARES CHASED WITH ORCHIDS AND BAMBOO A four-piece set of silver tea wares of varying sizes, comprising a rattan-wrapped overhead-handled pot, a side-handled pot mounted with ivory, a lidded incense box fitted with a pierced hardwood cover, and a cylindrical tea caddy. Each piece is incised with orchids and bamboo leaves in a restrained manner. The overhead handle is bound with rattan and the lid knob is pierced; the side handle is mounted with ivory; the lidded box has a pierced hardwood cover set with a jade bead. The silver is darkly patinated. This set belongs to the Qing gongfu tea tradition that arose in Minnan and Chaozhou and spread across Lingnan from the mid-Qing. Gongfu tea demands precise pouring, high pour and low serve, the pot passed round and the last drops apportioned, so a silver pot keeps the water at temperature and concentrates the aroma through a narrow mouth and long spout. The rattan-wrapped overhead handle and ivory side grip prevent scalding; the lidded box served for tea cake or incense. Cantonese silversmiths, especially around the Thirteen Hongs, made such wares to order, chasing orchids and bamboo, literati symbols, onto vessels that blend tea-craft with studio taste.
