A QING GILT-SILVER FILIGREE AND BLUE-ENAMELED FOUR-FOOTED SQUARE CENSER WITH DRAGONS 尺寸:L:15cm;W:4cm;H:15cm 銀鎏金,掐絲工藝。 A square censer in gilt-silver filigree, with upright outward-flaring handles and four slender feet. The body is covered in a mesh of gold filigree, over which an ascending dragon is chased, scales finely defined, amid flaming pearls and auspicious clouds, set with turquoise beads. The pierced cover is surmounted by a dragon knob. Handles and feet are finished in blue enamel. The workmanship is intricate. Filigree, or wire-pinching, involves hammering gold or silver into hair-thin wires, bending them with tweezers into outlines, and soldering them to a body. The cells are then filled with blue enamel paste and fired repeatedly at over eight hundred degrees, ground back and refilled three or four times until level, the technique known as cloisonné. A silver-gilt body is more costly than the common copper cloisonné used for ordinary wares; both the Imperial Workshops and private Cantonese silversmiths produced such pieces. The turquoise beads are set into round sockets and fixed with adhesive or riveting, a common Qing practice on luxury metalwork.
