A ZITAN MIRROR STAND WITH OPENWORK DRAGON AND PHOENIX 尺寸:L:55cm;W:33cm;H:68cm 紫檀木製。 A zitan wood mirror stand in the form of a three-panel screen, the central panel taller than the wings. The center is openwork carved with a dragon pursuing a pearl among clouds, while the wings show phoenixes among peonies. A flaming jewel crowns the top, dragon heads project from the corners, and the armrest rails are pierced with kui-dragon scrolls. The base holds three long drawers and two square drawers, fitted with floral pulls. The feet are inward-curved and the apron carved in openwork scrolls. The mirror stand, or dressing table, was used by women for morning toilette. Before glass mirrors were introduced in the Qing, bronze mirrors were set facing upward on stands; after the glass mirror arrived, it was fitted into a framed screen. This three-panel screen form has a taller central panel to hold the mirror, lower wings for lateral lighting, and drawers below to hold combs, hairpins and cosmetics. Made of dense zitan with pierced dragon-and-phoenix carving, it is an important boudoir piece.
