AN EARLY QING HUANGHUALI SQUARE-CORNER CABINET WITH OPENWORK KUI-DRAGON DOORS 尺寸:L:57cm;W:32cm;H:80cm 黃花梨木製。 An early Qing huanghuali square-corner cabinet, with a flat overhanging top and a pair of doors. Each door is openwork carved with paired kui-dragons amid scrolling vines, the doors also pierced at top and bottom with ruyi-shaped vents. A brass plate pull is mounted at the center, with brass hinges at the sides. The plain apron and straight inward-turned feet complete the form. The golden-brown wood is mellow and the pierced carving delicate. The square-corner cabinet is the basic storage piece of Ming-Qing hardwood furniture: a pair of doors over internal shelves and drawers, used for books, clothing and curios. Suzhou and Guangzhou workshops both produced it in quantity. The openwork kui-dragon door panels on this example make it more of a display cabinet than a purely storage piece, the pierced carving also allowing air to circulate. The early Qing straight members and simple mouldings still show the lingering taste of Ming design.
