A HUANGHUALI TABLE SCREEN SET WITH A CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL ROUNDEL OF THE THREE STARS, QING DYNASTY This circular huanghuali table screen encloses a cloisonné enamel roundel depicting the Three Stars of Prosperity, Emolument, and Longevity: the God of Longevity holding a peach at centre, flanked by Fu and Lu figures, with a deer, cranes, pine, and sun. The enamel colours are vivid and the cloisonné wires precise. The openwork stand is carved with the Three Friends of Winter, making it an elegant desk ornament. The Three Stars of Fu, Lu and Shou grew from star worship: Fu, originally the year star Jupiter, became a god of blessing; Lu, a star of the Wenchang palace, governed official rank; Shou, the Old Man of the South Pole, governed lifespan. From the Ming-Qing they were personified as an official with a child, an official holding a tablet, and a bald long-browed deity leaning on a staff and peach, accompanied by a deer (a homophone for lu) and a crane (a longevity symbol)—among the most popular auspicious themes in Chinese art.
